Ships, Sea Smoke and a Sunrise

I had great intentions to make it to work on time this morning…until I decided to bring my camera with me.  I ended up taking a little detour.  First stop, the parking lot at the church Mike & I were married.  The parking lot has fabulous views of Lake Superior.  The sun had just risen and the sea smoke was billowing up from the lake.  Ten ships were anchored awaiting their turn at the dock (there really are ten, you just can’t see them all in my photo).

I wanted a closer look, so I made another stop at the shore of Lake Superior.  The ships were there, just not visible because of the low level sea smoke.

I finally made it to my destination and this was the view outside the back door.

What a beautiful place to live and work…despite the subzero temps.  I’m still trying to warm up.

On my way into work on Monday, Mike called and said that he had heard that a ship was about to come in under the Aerial Lift Bridge.  It was covered in ice from its days on Lake Superior in subzero temperatures.   As I drove, I spotted the Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. still out on the lake just a couple of miles from the bridge.  I made it to work, grabbed my company’s point-and-shoot camera and headed back outside just in time to capture a few photos.  Seeing the guys out on the deck of the ship made me very thankful for my desk job indoors.

I brought my camera with me to work on Friday in the hopes of stopping by Bayfront Park at some point to see the hot air balloons at the Balloon Festival.  Due to weather conditions and a crazy work day, I never had the chance to see the balloons or even make it away from my desk.  I did stop by Canal Park on my way into work to take pictures of a ship sitting out in Lake Superior.  There was wonderful morning sunlight on the ship as I was making my way to Canal Park, but by the time I got there, the gray skies took over.

As I was leaving my office much later that day, the dark clouds of the morning were overtaken by bright sunlight.  This ship was just going out of the harbor as I was headed home for the day.

The beautiful sunshine stayed for most of the weekend as we ushered in fall.  I can’t wait to get out and capture some of the autumn colors in the coming weeks.
