Ski, Sun, Snow Storm

Mike and the kids spent Saturday skiing at Mont du Lac and Sunday skiing at Chester Bowl.  The final ski race of the season was on Sunday afternoon.  Sophia had two great runs and finished fourth out of seventeen racers in her age category.

Sophia posed with Julie, her American girl doll, wearing their ski gear following the races.

Mike finished the final test in his ski patrol certification last week.  He passed the toboggan test and is now an official National Ski Patrol.  We are very proud of you!!

We had another amazing sunrise this morning.  The small black spots are birds.

The weather forecast is calling for several inches of snow over the next 24 hours.  I hope they are wrong.  If not, perhaps we will have snowstorm photos later this week.

Lake Superior Ice

One of the greatest things about living near the largest fresh water lake in the world is seeing how it changes from day-to-day.  During spring and summer months it can be deep blue or if the winds are high, the clay soil churns up to make it look brown.  In the winter there can be days where the surface is covered with ice.  If the winds change, all of the ice pushes to shore to create open water.  After a number of very cold days a couple of weeks ago there was a shallow layer of ice.  Last week the winds pushed all of the ice into the shoreline to create a jagged surface resembling broken panes of glass.

Panes Of Ice

A number of people were out ice fishing just off the shore.  The journey out with their equipment was likely a little rough.

I wasn’t as adventurous as the ice fishermen or the couple that made their way out onto the ice.  I enjoyed the wonder of the ice from the safety of the shore.

The overcast afternoon wasn’t great for photos, but the icy rocks and shoreline still made it beautiful.

Week In Review

A quick recap of our week and a few gratuitous photos…

My Valentine’s bouquet still has blossoms.  The irises finished last week, but the lilies are still blooming.  Here is one of the stargazer lilies a few days ago.

The ice in the harbor made an unusual pattern last week.

The kids enjoyed a week off from school during their winter break last week.  They spent three days with some old daycare friends.  Mike and I took the other two days off from work to make for a long weekend with the kids.  We spent Thursday skiing and enjoyed a night away from home by using a gift certificate for a local hotel (with a pool for the kids, of course).

Sophia had a playdate with a good friend on Saturday.  They built a snowman in the front yard.

Sunday was spent at Chester Bowl.  Mike was volunteering as a ski patrol while Sophia competed in her first ski race of the season.  Sebastian wasn’t feeling well, but came with to help cheer her on.

There was a near full moon on Sunday night.  I was with Sebastian while we took Daphne for a walk.  The moon was golden while it was rising up from the lake.  This is what it looked like by the time we got back to the house.

Yesterday’s sunrise was quite beautiful.  I wish I had been down by the lake taking photos.  Instead, I stood outside my front door in my bathrobe snapping a few pictures before I got too cold and had to go inside.

Mike just informed me that it is after ten o’clock and time to wrap it up.  My alarm at 5:30am comes way too soon.  Until next time.
