Halloween 2012

We did little to prep for Halloween this year.  I carved one simple pumpkin – the design was chosen by Sophia.  Sebastian carved his own jack-o-lantern without a pattern or design in mind.  He did a great job!  We hung our milk jug skeleton (Mr. Bones) outside and put a few assorted Halloween decorations throughout the house.  For the most part, it was very low-key.  As for costumes, Sebastian found a wig at the store that he built a costume around.  We dug deep through our closets to accessorize.  He went trick-or-treating with several boys in a neighborhood by his old elementary school.  He came home with a pillow case half full of candy.  Sophia used part of her costume from last year, part of my costume from a few years ago and added some extra items to finish her look.  Mike took her trick-or-treating in our neighborhood for an hour or so.  They came home with a cauldron full of loot.

The kids had a great time trick-or-treating and the weather was perfect.  Daphne helped me hand out candy at our house.  No one bothered to use the doorbell when they arrived since Daphne announced each group of trick-or-treaters with a bark.

Last Colors Of Fall

The birch, maple and oak trees in our yard have all lost their leaves.  The few oak leaves that had remained early in the week quickly fell during the wind and rain that we had over the past few days.  Only a few bushes have endured and are brightening up an otherwise dreary, fog-filled week.

I did find a few lone trees with leaves as I made my way into work this morning.  The bright yellow of these trees brightened a foggy departure by an ore carrier under the Aerial Lift Bridge.

On The Road To Recovery

Daphne visited the vet on Thursday.  After a quick exam that included a check of her temperature and a fine needle aspiration of one of her lymph nodes, the vet determined that she does not have an infection.  All we know is that something triggered her immune system to go into overdrive.  She is a dog with a very “reactive” immune system.  The vet put her back on prednisone – twice a day for three days.  Over the next few weeks her dose will continue to be tapered off.  Our hope is to get her down to one half a tablet every other day.  If we can’t keep her healthy at a low dose or wean her off completely, our next step is to try a drug called Atopica.  It has fewer side effects, but will cost significantly more than prednisone.  After just a day of prednisone, she was acting like her old self yesterday.  The kids played with her in the backyard and were tired out before she was.
