Dogs!

The Vikings, Timberwolves and Wild have given little to nothing to cheer about this year.  So far the Twins have also been a disappointment.  I hope that the Twins tickets we purchased for August will be worthwhile – maybe they can turn things around…maybe.  With all of the losing seasons at the professional level of sports, we’ve been fortunate to have some college athletics to cheer about.

The UMD Bulldogs football team won a national title this past fall.  Mike and Sebastian made a few of the games including a December playoff game.  The weather was terrible – bitter cold with gale force winds, but UMD pulled off the win.  Now the Bulldog men’s hockey team brought home their own national title.  This was the first year that we’ve had season tickets (for Friday nights).  As friends of ours told us, you need to embrace winter in Minnesota.  They have had their own set of season tickets for the past few years.  In addition to all the skiing and skating the kids do now, having hockey tickets has made winter much more bearable and perhaps, dare I say, enjoyable this year.  With a new hockey arena to play in, it’s been fun to learn who the players are and actually understand the game a little more.  Sebastian loves our seats – only three rows up from the ice and very close to the action.  Sometimes a little too close for me as the guys get checked into the boards.  We even had a hockey stick go through the seal between two sections of glass and break off during the Gopher game.  Sebastian brought home the broken stick as a souvenir.  Sophia enjoys watching the Bulldog mascot, Champ, and also the cheerleaders during the game.  Even more so, she enjoys the concession stand food.  Her favorite so far is the Cold Stone Creamery mint chocolate chip ice cream.

After a disappointing run in the WCHA playoffs, the Bulldogs hockey team made an amazing run in the NCAA playoffs.  When they won the championship game against Michigan last Saturday, we were all beyond excited.  A welcome home reception for the team was held this past Wednesday night at AMSOIL Arena.  The kids wanted to get autographs from the team and see the NCAA trophy.  Sebastian wore his UMD hockey jersey and we bought a UMD hockey t-shirt for Sophia to get autographed.  There was a big crowd and before the program was over, Sebastian and I got in line for autographs and Sophia and Mike joined us.  Two hours later and with a ketchup stain on Sophia’s new Bulldog t-shirt, the kids had their autographed apparel complete with each of the team member’s signatures.

Since it’s not looking good for the MN Twins, we are putting all of our faith in Sebastian’s Little League baseball team.  No pressure Sebastian!

Drafted

Sebastian had baseball tryouts this past weekend.  He played in minors last year and had the opportunity to tryout for majors this year.  Mike had been working with him in the back yard the past couple of weeks to get him ready.  Tryouts were held Saturday evening (during the UMD hockey game) and Sunday morning.  Mike and Sebastian both thought it went very well.  Sebastian held off his nerves and made plays in front of more than a dozen coaches and many fellow baseball players and parents.  The phone call came last night to let him know if he had made it.  Sebastian and I were in the backyard throwing the ball while Mike was at gymnastics with Sophia.  We had just been talking about tryouts and the upcoming baseball season when a former coach and father of one his best friends called to let him know he was drafted to the Red Sox.  He would be on a team with some of his closest friends.  He handled the phone call very well and even said thank you to his new coach.  We’re very proud of you Sebastian and are looking forward to a great season.  WAY TO GO!

Creativity

I brought home a few promotional items from work this week.  A sales person was pitching their services to my boss and left behind items with their company logo.  I was given a choice between a can cozy, a small utility light and some stress-relieving yellow squishy guys.  I won the jackpot and ended up with the light and both of the squishy guys.  The kids always love that kind of stuff, for a little while anyway.  It’s like bringing home McDonald’s toys – it entertains them for a about five minutes, then ends up in a bin along with the ones from the previous visit to the place famous for its Big Macs.  This time Sebastian was out-of-town on his Wolf Ridge trip, so Sophia ended up with all the loot.  Plus she had a bonus – a big box from Kohl’s had arrived during the day.  Every kid loves big boxes.  The last one that we had was turned into a car with paper wheels and headlights, bumpers and a steering wheel.  Sophia thought the squishy guys and the light were pretty cool.  However, an hour later when she saw the box in the living room, she said, “Why didn’t you tell me we had a box?”.  I guess she was excited about all of the endless possibilities that lie ahead.  I was busy in the kitchen while she was busy in the living room with scissors, glue and coloring crayons.  She did poke her head in the kitchen for a moment to scope out some “building materials” from the recycle bin.  When she was all done she had created a soccer arena complete with two yellow squishy guy soccer players, a soccer ball made from paper, two goal posts and for when it gets dark out – the arena was equipped with an overhead light.  Check it out…

Very impressive given the materials she had to work with.  It’s nice to see that kids can still be creative.
