The kids were on spring break last week. We were able to divide up their time doing lots of fun things with some of their favorite people. On Monday and Tuesday they were at Cindy’s (our summer daycare) catching up with some of the kids they haven’t seen for a while, making fun art projects, playing games and having a good time.
Mike took Wednesday off and met up with some of the same daycare kids and Cindy at the YMCA pool in Superior. They spent the morning swimming and then had lunch at their friends Alexander and Emily’s house nearby.Mike and I were both off from work on Thursday. It was warm enough to get Sebastian and Sophia’s bikes out, but cold enough for Sophia to wear her winter jacket (see below). We went down to the Lakewalk and walked/biked to Canal Park. We spent some time along the shore looking through the rocks and driftwood and throwing skippers into the lake.

We went to the movies later that afternoon. Sebastian had been asking to see Diary of Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules since the previews began months ago. He read and enjoyed all of the Wimpy Kid books and couldn’t wait to see the movie. We all agreed that the movie was very good and very funny. The buttery popcorn was a big hit too.
I brought home a few promotional items from work this week. A sales person was pitching their services to my boss and left behind items with their company logo. I was given a choice between a can cozy, a small utility light and some stress-relieving yellow squishy guys. I won the jackpot and ended up with the light and both of the squishy guys. The kids always love that kind of stuff, for a little while anyway. It’s like bringing home McDonald’s toys – it entertains them for a about five minutes, then ends up in a bin along with the ones from the previous visit to the place famous for its Big Macs. This time Sebastian was out-of-town on his Wolf Ridge trip, so Sophia ended up with all the loot. Plus she had a bonus – a big box from Kohl’s had arrived during the day. Every kid loves big boxes. The last one that we had was turned into a car with paper wheels and headlights, bumpers and a steering wheel. Sophia thought the squishy guys and the light were pretty cool. However, an hour later when she saw the box in the living room, she said, “Why didn’t you tell me we had a box?”. I guess she was excited about all of the endless possibilities that lie ahead. I was busy in the kitchen while she was busy in the living room with scissors, glue and coloring crayons. She did poke her head in the kitchen for a moment to scope out some “building materials” from the recycle bin. When she was all done she had created a soccer arena complete with two yellow squishy guy soccer players, a soccer ball made from paper, two goal posts and for when it gets dark out – the arena was equipped with an overhead light. Check it out…

Very impressive given the materials she had to work with. It’s nice to see that kids can still be creative.
Originally a gift from my grandmother to my mother, this string of pearls has now been passed down to me along with a note from my mom. It was supposed to be a gift for my 40th birthday, but my Mom gave it to me last year. I guess she didn’t want to wait. It will now be a gift for Sophia on her 40th birthday – 34 years from now.
String Of Pearls
This class ring belonged to my Dad’s mother. She graduated in 1926 from Cromwell High School. I never met her, she died when my Dad was just a teenager. This is the only thing I have that she owned. Just last week her younger brother (my great uncle) passed away at age 97. He was the last remaining sibling out of 13 kids.
