Split Rock Lighthouse

DAY 3 (Part 2) – Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Our final stop before arriving home was the Split Rock Lighthouse.

Split Rock Light House operated from 1910 until 1969. The Split Rock Lighthouse is located in Two Harbors, Minnesota. The light house commands a panoramic view of Lake Superior from the 130 foot cliff from which it stands on. Built after a 1905 fierce storm that sank one ship nearby and more than 30 others on Lake Superior. Superior is the most unpredictable, deepest, and coldest of the Great Lakes.

DAY 3 (Part 1) – High Falls, Two Step Falls and the Baptism River

The High Falls of the Baptism River are the highest entirely contained in Minnesota. Pigeon Falls in Grand Portage are higher, but are part of the international border with Canada.  We opted for 100% Minnesota waterfalls and were not disappointed.  The falls are over 60 ft high and spectacular.

Over the river.

Across the bridge.

To the High Falls we go.

Enjoying the view.

After we enjoyed the High Falls, we headed back up.  Mike and Sophia went on ahead while I took a few more photos.

Far, far away are Mike and Sophia…

The Baptism River.

Next…Two Step Falls.
There were quite a few more than two steps to get there.

Complicated roots.

Local wildlife.

There was much more to see at Tettegouche State Park, but we needed to get on our way toward home. We made one more stop before reaching Duluth.
Next up…Split Rock Light House.

Grand Marais

DAY 2 (Part 2) – Naniboujou Lodge and Grand Marais

Naniboujou Lodge was first conceived in the 1920’s as an ultra exclusive private club. Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey and Ring Lardner were among its charter members. A membership of 1000 was originally sought, but when the stock market crashed on “Black Tuesday” precipitating Naniboujou, the club began to fail. In the mid 1930’s the club reached a state of financial shambles. The mortgage was foreclosed, and it was sold.

Throughput the succeeding years the Lodge has been owned and operated by various corporations or private individuals and families. Still reflecting the aura of the 20’s, Naniboujou is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The Lodge boasts Minnesota’s largest native rock fireplace, a 200 ton work of art which stands in the 30 x 80 foot Great Hall. www.naniboujou.com

Outside Naniboujou along the Lake Superior shore.

Watching the waves roll in.

Taking photos and video.

Where is Mike?

Next stop, Grand Marais – just 40 miles from the Canadian border.

Sebastian decided to try out his new rain jacket against the Lake Superior waves.

His shirt was dry, but his shorts and shoes were soaked.

On the way out of town and back to Lutsen for one more night.

Up next, DAY 3 – Tettegouche State Park and Split Rock Light House
