Spring Break, Part II

The next part of our spring break was spent in the Twin Cities.  Mike still had hotel points from back in his travel days, so we used some of them to stay at a hotel in St. Paul on Friday and Saturday night.  We left Daphne behind – our neighbor took care of her – packed up the car and made our way to the hotel.  The kids loved the atrium in the lobby.  It was filled with trees, plants, a pond and ducks.  Sophia sneaked up on one and was able to pet its feathery head.   The kids checked out the pool and were happy to see that there was also a hot tub.  Our room was spacious and had a fridge, microwave and separate sleeping and living areas.  We had dinner at the hotel restaurant and swam afterwards.

Saturday was spent at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.  We looked at the plants and flowers at the conservatory first.  I wasn’t sure if the kids would like it, but they enjoyed it as much as Mike and I did.  I don’t know the names of half the flowers I photographed, so I will post these without descriptions.

Unique and beautiful plants, cool animals and souvenirs from the gift shop.  What could be better?  To be continued…

Spring Break, Part I

The kids were on spring break last week.  We were able to divide up their time doing lots of fun things with some of their favorite people.  On Monday and Tuesday they were at Cindy’s (our summer daycare) catching up with some of the kids they haven’t seen for a while, making fun art projects, playing games and having a good time.

Mike took Wednesday off and met up with some of the same daycare kids and Cindy at the YMCA pool in Superior.  They spent the morning swimming and then had lunch at their friends Alexander and Emily’s house nearby.Mike and I were both off from work on Thursday.  It was warm enough to get Sebastian and Sophia’s bikes out, but cold enough for Sophia to wear her winter jacket (see below).  We went down to the Lakewalk and walked/biked to Canal Park.  We spent some time along the shore looking through the rocks and driftwood and throwing skippers into the lake.

We went to the movies later that afternoon.  Sebastian had been asking to see Diary of  Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules since the previews began months ago.  He read and enjoyed all of the Wimpy Kid books and couldn’t wait to see the movie.  We all agreed that the movie was very good and very funny.  The buttery popcorn was a big hit too.

Cabin Weekend

We spent Labor Day weekend at Tom & Karen’s cabin.  The kids played on the sandy beach, went for boat, pontoon and jet ski rides, looked for frogs, made s’mores and watched our mini fireworks display.  Tom made his famous deep-fried turkey and Karen made her delicious Boursin potatoes for dinner on Saturday.  The weather was cool, but comfortable for being outdoors.  It was a much-needed weekend away.
