End Of The Season

Here are a few photos of the garden taken at the end of August.  We are still picking tomatoes, using basil in pesto and caprese salads, picking beans and cucumbers and harvesting a few of the carrots.  We also have Concord grapes that need to be made into jelly and apples to pick.  I’m way behind with my blogging as we were out of town during the Labor Day weekend and have spent the past week preparing for the kids to return to school.  Lots to do and not nearly enough time to do it.

Date Night

While the kids were at a sleepover with friends, Mike and I ventured out for a much-needed date night.  Although we were not overly creative, we did have a great evening.  We both had a long work week and couldn’t have picked a better night to sit outside on a warm August evening.  We enjoyed drinks, an appetizer and dinner on Valentini’s deck.  After dinner, we walked over to the Rose Garden and Lakewalk.

We ventured through the rose garden, towards Leif Erikson Park and down to Fitger’s.

A big thank you to our friends who had the kids over night.  It was the perfect way to end a long week.

Pretty Little Zinnias

Sophia went to a garden-themed birthday party way back in May.  Each child at the party planted seeds into a small pot and brought them home as their party favor.  Sophia watered her seeds when she got home and after several days the seeds came up.  We kept the small pot outside on our deck and made sure the plants were watered.  Through several torrential downpours in June, the little seedlings survived.  Sophia lost interest in them a bit as the weeks passed.  We did make sure they stayed water, but they probably could have used some fertilizer and a big pot.  Just this past week I noticed that there were buds forming on the small plants.  Sophia became excited to see what kind of flowers the plants would have.  She was surprised to see that the first two blooms were different colors.  They aren’t the most exquisite of flowers, but we agreed that she had grown some pretty little zinnias.

There are a few more plants with buds and Sophia is anxiously awaiting to see if they will bloom in different colors too.
