Double Feature

Sebastian and Sophia both had school programs on Thursday afternoon last week.  Sebastian had a classroom play at 1:45pm and Sophia had her preschool graduation at 2:00pm.  Mike and I decided to split up so that each child would have a parent in attendance.  I headed to Congdon to see Sebastian and Mike headed to Kinder Korner to see Sophia.  We each brought a video camera so that we could share the kids big moments later.  Sebastian was a burglar in his play.  His costume consisted of a black shirt and pants and a black hat.  They were asked to not wear anything on their faces that would obstruct their eyesight.  It was very low-budget. 🙂 The play was a musical with narration.  The kids had fun showing off their singing and acting talents.  It was short, but very cute.

The play was done by 2:15pm, so I decided to head across town to see if I could catch part of Sophia’s graduation.  I made it in time to see the last three songs and watch her go on stage to receive her “diploma”.  They had also done a short skit and more singing before I got there.  There was a reception afterward complete with cupcakes and punch to finish off a fantastic preschool year.  The whole experience helped her meet new friends and try many new things.

Baseball Doubleheader

Sebastian had his first baseball game last night.  His team name is the Tigers.  They picked up uniforms (shirts & baseball hats) right before the game started.  He was a bit nervous moving up to the “minors” this year, but he did really well.  He had a great play at second base and got a player out on the other team.

We had a special treat last night in being able to watch two games at the same time.  Sebastian’s cousin Nick was playing on the field right behind us.  Nick is in the “majors” and my brother John is coaching his team again this year.  We were able to see a couple of Nick’s hits and some of his pitching and fielding.  It was a great night of baseball.

On a side note, while most of the state was enjoying temperatures in the 70’s, 80’s and even the 90’s, Duluth had a high temperature of 45 degrees yesterday.  The wind was gusting and it was downright frigid, compliments of Lake Superior and a cold front over NE Minnesota.  Mike recommended wearing my winter coat and I’m so glad I did.  I felt a bit silly when I left the house in a down coat that I usually wear to Sebastian’s outdoor hockey games, but after sitting outside on a metal bench for an hour and a half, I didn’t care too much about my spring fashion faux pas.

Sunflowers

Last year we grew sunflowers along the side of our back deck.  We have always wanted to grow them, but each time we planted the seed something would dig up them up.  We blamed the squirrels and birds.  We were smart last year and planted the seeds in a big planter in the house.  We transplanted the little seedlings when they were a couple of weeks old.  Some didn’t make it through the transplant process.  A few were knocked over later on during a big rain storm.  A couple were destroyed during a backyard game of kickball.  Finally, by mid-summer we had a half a dozen sunflower plants with flowers.

We saved seeds from last year’s sunflowers in the hopes of growing a batch this year.  Again we planted the little seeds in a planter.  We set it out on the garden cart on the back deck to get some warmth from the sun.  The next day we went out to water the planter.  All of the seeds were dug up and dirt was all over the deck.  We couldn’t believe that some little creature had the audacity to come next to the house, climb up the garden cart and dig up all of the seeds.  The strange thing was that there were no empty sunflower shells to be found.  We realized it must be a chipmunk that stashed them in his cheeks and brought them back home with him.  Luckily, we found another small bag of sunflower seeds that we had saved.  We were a little smarter with the second batch and kept the planter in the house.  After only five days, the seeds began emerging from the soil.

We have about 30 plants coming up.   We hope that at least a few make it so that we can enjoy sunflowers again this year.
