Bike Ride

Last Saturday we loaded our bikes on our bike trailer and headed down to the Lakewalk for an afternoon ride. We stopped along the way to enjoy the rocky lake shore. I brought our old point-and-shoot along just in case we wanted to pretend we were tourists. As you can see below, we blended right in. I couldn’t help but take pictures on such a beautiful day.

After a nice ride back to our vehicle, we were ready to head home and make dinner. We ran into a problem putting the bikes on the trailer because of a missing pin. Without it, the bike trailer wouldn’t stay attached to the hitch. It must have fallen on the ground when we were taking our bikes off the trailer and someone took it. Luckily we had our bike locks with us and were able to lock three of our four bikes to a post. We threw Sophia’s in the back of our vehicle along with our bike trailer. Mike dropped me and the kids off at home, emptied out the back of our vehicle and headed back down to the Lakewalk to see if he could fit all three of the remaining bikes in one trip. I was doubtful, but I guess our vehicle is bigger than I thought because he was able to make it back with all three. Dinner was delayed a bit, but we did finally sit down to nicely grilled steaks before 8 o’clock. After the kids went to bed, my brother stopped by. He had received a phone call from me during our dilemma on the Lakewalk looking for a spare pin. He had been out running errands before he stopped by and made a special trip to Menard’s to pick up a new pin for us. He guessed on the size and it was a perfect fit! Thanks John – you rock!!

We’re back in business and ready for our next ride.

Spring Break, Part I

The kids were on spring break last week.  We were able to divide up their time doing lots of fun things with some of their favorite people.  On Monday and Tuesday they were at Cindy’s (our summer daycare) catching up with some of the kids they haven’t seen for a while, making fun art projects, playing games and having a good time.

Mike took Wednesday off and met up with some of the same daycare kids and Cindy at the YMCA pool in Superior.  They spent the morning swimming and then had lunch at their friends Alexander and Emily’s house nearby.Mike and I were both off from work on Thursday.  It was warm enough to get Sebastian and Sophia’s bikes out, but cold enough for Sophia to wear her winter jacket (see below).  We went down to the Lakewalk and walked/biked to Canal Park.  We spent some time along the shore looking through the rocks and driftwood and throwing skippers into the lake.

We went to the movies later that afternoon.  Sebastian had been asking to see Diary of  Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules since the previews began months ago.  He read and enjoyed all of the Wimpy Kid books and couldn’t wait to see the movie.  We all agreed that the movie was very good and very funny.  The buttery popcorn was a big hit too.

To be continued…

The Blizzard That Wasn’t

Snow predictions were as high as 24 inches and included a blizzard warning for our recent weather event.  It started with high winds on Tuesday.  The waves on Lake Superior were incredible.  Surfers in wet suits were even seen enjoying a ride on the cold waves.  On my way back to work after lunch, I stopped by Canal Park to take a few photos as the water crashed into the shore.  The spray of water soaked the weather watchers who were standing too close.

We waited for the snow to begin Tuesday afternoon and then into the evening.  A few snowflakes began at around 6pm and then stopped abruptly an hour later.  The kids went to bed hoping for school to be closed the next day as the weather forecaster were still predicting snow.  At 5am Daphne needed to go outside.  Mike reported back that the driveway was bare – no snow.  The winds had been strong and gusty all night long and continued throughout the day on Wednesday.  Sustained winds were around 50mph at one point and a gust of 70mph was recorded on the Bong Bridge between Duluth and Superior.  The waves on the lake continued to be high.  I made a stop in Canal Park at the location I took photos the day before.  The spray of lake water in the parking lot was too much for me to even get out of my vehicle – no pictures and still no snow.  I couldn’t help but check back this morning (Thursday) after the winds had died down to see what the landscape looked like next to the Aerial Lift Bridge and Lake Superior shore…it was incredible!

Mother nature never ceases to amaze us.  Our weather may not be the best in the country, but it certainly is the most interesting and beautiful.
