Game On

We had an evening filled with soccer and races last night.  I took Sophia to her very first soccer game while Mike drove Sebastian to Central High School for Wednesday Night at the Races.  Sebastian’s race finished early enough that they were able to make it for the second half of Sophia’s game.

Sophia was asked to do the kick-off to start the game.  Her kick-off led to a goal by one her teammates.  The kids were all pretty excited.  So were the parents.  The team played well and Sophia did a great job keeping up with the ball.  She didn’t kick the ball a lot, but it may have been that she was outnumbered by the very energetic boys on her team.  Or maybe she was waiting to make her first kick worthwhile – a goal.  Yes, her first kick of night resulted in a goal for her team.  Way to go, Sophia!

Look for number “34” in the photos below – or the only kid with a ponytail and pink shorts on the Congdon team. 🙂

Sebastian lined up with thirty-five 7 & 8 year old boys for his 1/4 mile race.  He had a nice pace at the start of the race, but kicked it into high gear to finish.  He passed several kids and ended up placing 5th at 1 minute 34 seconds.  Nice job, Sebastian!

The Next Babe Winkelman & Mia Hamm

Okay, so those two people have nothing in common, but I wanted to combine two things that have been going on with Sebastian and Sophia this week.

We went on a quick overnight trip with John, Denise & Nick to Tom & Karen’s cabin on Friday night.  We arrived fairly late, but the boys wanted to try out the fishing anyway.  Before the light rain turned into a downpour, Sebastian pulled in this beautiful 15 1/2 inch, 2+ lb bass.  Thus, the title “The Next Babe Winkelman”.  For those who don’t know who Babe is, just ask Mike (or do a Google search).  He met the master fisherman back in our hotel days.  I believe Mike still has his autographed photo tucked away somewhere special.

The next morning Nick was up at 6am ready to fish.  John and Nick caught seven more fish in the morning and Mike added to the count later on.  We fried up the fresh catch for lunch.  Delicious!

On to the Mia Hamm part of the story…

Sophia had her first soccer practice last night.  We arrived at the field to meet her teammates – six boys.  So much for meeting other Congdon girls before she starts kindergarten.  There is one player that wasn’t able to make it to practice.  Our hope is that the missing teammate is a girl.  Sophia was a bit timid at first, but did all the soccer drills that were requested by her coach.  She looked pretty adorable in her soccer cleats, shin guards and pink shorts.  We are planning to have a family soccer game tonight in the backyard to prepare for her first game tomorrow night.  We’ll see then if she has Mia Hamm potential.

In the next photo Sophia is the one sitting on a pink soccer ball.  She probably didn’t know what to make of all those boys.

The Races

The kids participated in their first Wednesday Night at the Races of the summer.  The races were held next door to my office at Bayfront Festival Park.  We arrived at the park a little early.  Sophia and Mike decided to stay at the playground while Sebastian and I handled the registration for the races.  Sebastian also spent some time checking out the course and working on his strategy.  It was a beautiful evening in Duluth for the races, partly cloudy and not too hot.  We even watched a ship go out under the Aerial Lift Bridge while we waited.  I didn’t bring my camera with, but couldn’t resist snapping a few photos with my new phone.  Pardon the lack of clarity and focus.

Sophia’s race was first.  She is in a tough category this year – 5 & 6 year old girls.  She is one of the youngest in her division with her 5th birthday just over a month ago.  She wasn’t too sure about running alone, so Mike stayed along side her for the race.  I think he slowed her down. 🙂

Sebastian is in the 7 & 8 year old division this year.  Since he will be 9 in October, he is one of the older kids in his division.  He was lined up at the back, but did an awesome job getting up front during the race and passing a lot of kids along the course.  He finished in the top ten.  Way to go!
