Ice Storm, Cont.

We were fortunate to have avoided the worst of the ice storm earlier this week.  The North Shore was hit hard with downed trees and power lines.  We had a only a few trees and some branches down in our area.  No loss of power.  We snapped a few photos on Monday of the ice that had accumulated on the trees and other things in our yard.  It was rather beautiful, but eerie at the same time.   The crackling and snapping of ice falling off trees made me a little uneasy.  Mike was having flashbacks to eight years ago when Sebastian was just a baby.  We lost power for three days during an April ice storm.  We braved the first day without power.  Keeping a baby warm without heat and changing diapers in the cold was a bit much.  No hot water was the last straw.  We were fortunate to have friends just a mile away with power.  They let us stay with them the next two nights and our neighbor across the street kept our freezer items for us.  For some reason all of our neighbors across the street regained power after the first day.  Those of us on the “other side of the tracks” had to wait two more days.

Meeting A Former NFL Great

Sebastian & Chuck Foreman, originally uploaded by MSullivan Photography.

Sebastian had the opportunity to meet former MN Vikings player, Chuck Foreman, yesterday.  A local store is having a grand opening this week and is having sports figures sign autographs each day. Of course Mike was even more excited than Sebastian. He went through all of his old sports memorabilia to find an old football card of Chuck Foreman’s from 1975.  He found a second card that Mr. Foreman shared with OJ Simpson for their record-breaking seasons.  Mike decided that the Foreman/OJ combo may not be the most appropriate item to ask for an autograph on.  They opted for the 1975 football card and a Vikings hat and were able to get autographs on each one.  Sebastian brought his digital camera and Mike snapped a picture after waiting in line for 35 minutes.  Sebastian said that he didn’t mind the wait, it was definitely worth it!  Next up, former MN Twins player, Jack Morris, on Thursday.  Mike has already tracked down a t-shirt from the ’91 Twins with Jack Morris on it and Sebastian is planning to ask him if his arm got sore during 7th game of the World Series when he pitched 10 innings.

On a side note, Mike expressed his great disappointed in my knowledge of Chuck Foreman.  Apparently Mr. Foreman was a running back for the Vikings team, not a defensive player as I had thought.  My apologies to both Mike and Mr. Foreman.  I guess my memory as a four year old in 1975 is not a good as I had hoped.

Rain/Freezing Rain/Wind

RAIN/FREEZING RAIN/WIND – That is today’s forecast in Duluth.  I guess I should not have complained about yesterday’s windy weather.  When Sophia looked out the window this morning her response was, “Holy buckets”.  Rain was pouring down, the wind was blowing and the freezing rain we had overnight had glazed over the trees, power lines and cars.   She did see the positive side of things later in our ride to daycare.  She told me that she was very happy to see all of the rain because it helps the grass and flowers grow.  Yeah Sophia, me too…I guess.

I’m not sure how Sebastian felt about the rain.  His bus was 10 minutes late this morning.  He was pretty well soaked by the time it pulled up at his stop.  I always drive down to the bus stop with Sophia and wait until Sebastian’s bus comes before we head off to daycare.  I offered Sebastian a ride this morning, but he refused.  I think he is too cool at his age to get a ride (one block) with his Mom and sister. And as he waited in the rain and the wind, I offered him a warm, dry seat in the car.  Again, he refused.  I’m quite certain his stubbornness was only because he didn’t want to give up his first place spot in line for the bus.

This photo is for Sophia who could see the positive side of the miserable weather this morning.  I can hardly wait until this is what I see out my kitchen window.
